BTW, I like this expression very much, because the literal meaning is: "What the vulture!" :-)
I guess vultures are synonymous with hell then in German culture....
"What the devil?! " Superstitious people were afraid to name the devil, so they replaced him with an unpopular animal, turning him into a vulture.
